Finding ways to make housing which is affordable has become extremely difficult since the introduction of tighter and tighter rules which dictate how a building is to look and be built according to simplistic rules. In Berlin especially they have resulted in social upheaval because unscrupulous developers have used the excuse of energy efficient modernisation to hike up the rents to untenable levels.

In this respect a comment by Glenn Murcutt, the Australian architect famous for his environmentally sensitive buildings when asked about sustainable architecture comes to mind. His answer was, “Well some of it isn’t sustainable and most of it isn’t Architecture.

We have spent much time developing ideas for housing that is both affordable and sustainable while allowing the home owner to increase the performance of their dwelling in the years subsequent to moving in. We make architectural space rather than building services work hard to improve energy efficiency!
